Let’s learn about: Types of fractions.

There are three types of fractions: Proper, Improper and Mixed fraction.

So, we can define the three types of fractions like this:

Proper Fraction

A fraction is proper when the numerator is less (-) than the denominator

Look this example:

The numerator (number 1) is less (-) than the denominator (number 2).

These are examples of proper fractions.

Improper Fraction

A fraction is improper when the numerator is greater (+) than denominator.

Example:

The numerator (number 3) is greater (+) than the denominator (number 2).

Look at these examples:

Mixed Fraction

This fraction has two parts: whole number and fraction.

Example:

The number 1 is the whole number and 5/7 is the fraction.

More examples:

How to convert a mixed fraction into improper fraction?

Step Nº 1: keep the same denominator

Step Nº 2: Multiply the whole number with the denominator

Step Nº 3: Add 10 with the numerator

Finally: We find the improper fraction

Lesson Plan Nº10 - Spanish version

Let’s learn about: Addition of fractions.

For adding fractions, it is important to know that there are two types of fractions: Homogeneous and Heterogeneous

Homogeneous Fractions

Fractions are homogeneous when they have the same denominator.

Example:

Heterogeneous Fractions

Fractions are heterogeneous when they have a different denominator.

Example

For adding fractions, it is important to identify the type of the fraction. Pay attention to these examples:

Addition of Homogeneous Fractions

To add homogeneous fractions, we add the numerators and keep the same denominator.

Addition of Heterogeneous Fractions

To add heterogeneous fractions, you must follow these steps.

Example

Step Nº 1: Take the denominators, and find the least common multiple (L.C.M).

The least common multiple of 3 and 5 is 15.  We take this number and write the new denominator.

Step Nº 2: Multiply the numerator with the denominator crosswise.

Step Nº 3: Add the numerators and keep the denominator.

And, this is the answer:

Let’s watch the videos!

Video Nº1- Addition of homogeneous fractions.

Video Nº2- Addition of heterogeneous fractions.

Let’s practice!

Activity Nº1
Solve the following additions, choose the correct option.

                       Activity Nº 2

Watch the following additions and find the answer by matching each fraction with its pair.

Activity Nº 3
Reduce the fractions to the common denominator. choose the correct option.
