Lesson Plan Nº11 - Spanish version

Let’s learn about: Subtraction of fractions.

For subtracting fractions, remember that there are two types of fractions: Homogeneous and Heterogeneous

Homogeneous Fractions

Fractions are homogeneous when they have the same denominator.

Example:

Heterogeneous Fractions

Fractions are heterogeneous when they have a different denominator.

Example

For subtracting fractions, it is important to identify the type of the fraction. Pay attention to these examples:

Subtraction of Homogeneous Fractions

To subtract homogeneous fractions, you subtract the numerators and keep the same denominator.

For example:

Subtraction of Heterogeneous Fractions.

To subtract heterogeneous fractions, you must follow these steps.

Example:

Step Nº 1: Take the denominators, and find the least common multiple (L.C.M).

The least common multiple of 5 and 2 is 10.  We take this number and write the new denominator.

Step Nº 2: Multiply the numerator with the denominator crosswise.

Step Nº 3: Subtract the numerators and keep the denominator.

And, this is the answer:

Let’s watch the following videos!

Video Nº1- Subtraction of homogeneous fractions.

Video Nº2- Subtraction of heterogeneous fractions.

Let’s practice!

Activity Nº1

Identify whether the following fractions are: Homogeneous or Heterogeneous.

.

Activity Nº 2

Watch the following subtractions and find the answer by matching each fraction with its pair.

Activity Nº 3

Reduced the fractions to the common denominator. Choose the correct option.
