Lesson Plan Nº10 - English version
Lesson Plan Nº10 - Spanish version
Let’s learn about: Addition of fractions.
For adding fractions, it is important to know that there are two types
of fractions: Homogeneous
and Heterogeneous
Homogeneous
Fractions
Fractions are homogeneous when they have the same denominator.
Example:
Heterogeneous
Fractions
Fractions are heterogeneous when they have a different denominator.
Example
For adding fractions, it is important to identify the type of the fraction. Pay attention to these examples:
Addition
of Homogeneous Fractions
To add homogeneous fractions, we add the numerators and keep the same denominator.
Addition
of Heterogeneous Fractions
To add
heterogeneous fractions, you must follow these steps.
Example
Step Nº 1: Take the denominators, and find the least common
multiple (L.C.M).
The least
common multiple of 3
and 5 is 15. We take this number and write the new
denominator.
Step Nº 2: Multiply the numerator with the denominator crosswise.
Step Nº 3: Add the numerators and keep the denominator.
And, this is the answer:
Video Nº2- Addition of heterogeneous fractions.
Let’s practice!
Activity Nº 2
Watch the following additions and find the answer by matching each fraction with its pair.
